Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Private Funding of stem cell research

libfemme ( 03/01/2004, 19:17:37 )

The news of South Korea's success in cloning human embryonic stem cells seems to be having a positive effect in the US. Harvard University is no longer waiting on federal funding, always a problematic idea in my view anyway, and announced it is using its resources in the private sector to inititate raising funds to finance research on stem cells to make the University "proceeding in the direction of establishing a stem cell institute." Stanford and Wisconsin U have similiar plans. Too much is at stake for these prestigeous universities if they are left behind in the cutting edge of biotechnology and science.Harvard has the resources, Harvard has the breadth and, frankly, Harvard has the responsibility to take up the slack that the government is leaving," said Dr. George Q. Daley.Bravo, to Daley. Nothing like competition to spur people off the government trough and into doing things for themselves. Bush has done the nation, and the free enterprise system a service. By blocking government funds he's isolated government from the field which promises to save and extend billions of lives over the next decades.
