Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: The Empire Polls Back

libfemme ( 08/25/2004, 21:23:40 )

The Pope ain't what he used to be. He gets coverage because he is a celebrity more than because he has a strong affect on local political issues certainly in the Protestant anglo countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia).Germany bans the cloning of embryos, while allowing researchers to import older lines of embryonic stem cells. That means they may be like the catholic Scotsman, willing to take the fruits of the cloning tree. That's a dichotomy that will only last for so long. The chairman of the German National Ethics Council is warning that the country may lose scientists if it doesn't revise its opposition to cloning embryos despite the lower house's adamant position now. While Canadians are predicting the debate is far from over despite legislation. However the Parliament is adjourned for 6 weeks so nothing will happen until then.I suspect most of the public is just plain confused. The issue which seemed so black and white 3 years ago now is unclear. Most polls I've seen show a very large drop in opposition to cloning, but only a small rise in support. Where are the former opponents going? To the undecided. People aren't sure what stem cells, embryos or cloning are. Now they finally realize that fact and they aren't sure what which way to go yet.
