The question at the center of the debate is whether scientists should be allowed to create human life for the purpose of destroying it for research. The stakes are high; at risk is the status of the human embryo –– the tiniest member of our human community –– and whether we make life a commodity, rather than a creation from God. Last year, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a ban on human cloning for any purpose. Since then, pro-life lawmakers and advocacy groups have been urging the Senate to do the same. Even President Bush has called on the Senate to pass the complete cloning ban, which is sponsored by Sens. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and Mary Landrieu, D-La.Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has promised Sen. Brownback a vote on his comprehensive human cloning ban, but has yet to make good on that promise. In addition, almost 30 senators remain undecided on the issue.TAKE ACTION While many senators have pledged their support for the Brownback-Landrieu cloning bill, others have not announced their position on the bill. Therefore, please contact your two U.S. senators and urge them to:vote for the Brownback cloning ban, S. 1899; and pressure Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.
