The
United Nations is trying to ban cloning
The United Nations adopted a declaration against cloning. The declaration calls on all nations to ban reproductive cloning. Unfortunately this may prevent cloning being used as a cure for infertility.
The General Assembly's adoption of the nonbinding resolution in effect says that member states SHOULD ban reproductive cloning. Of course, the General Assembly has adopted similar resolutions against war, poverty, illiteracy, lack of equal rights for women, etc. etc. etc. It will no doubt be used against those who support human cloning, and may even provoke a few new countries to outlaw reproductive cloning. The strange thing is that the Universal Declarationof Human Rights, also a U.N. document, guarantees (in nonbinding terms) the right of every human to be free from "arbitrary interference with his privacy, family..." etc. (article 12), guarantees "the right to marry and to found a family" (article 16), and recognizes "the family [as] the natural and fundamental group unit of society [which is] entitled to protection by society...." (article 16 also). So, the recent General Assembly resolution is contrary to the U.N.'s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The U.N. Ambassador's staff says that they recognize that human cloning may someday be ethically acceptable, but says that the U.S. associated itself with the U.N. resolution long ago, when it was just a nonbinding statement of UNESCO (of which the U.S. is not a part).
Unfortunately this measure may result in a rash of new anti-cloning laws. The United States Ambassador to the UN is A. Peter Burleigh. Please call and express your views on this matter by leaving a message on his comment line at (212) 415-4062.
The direct number of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations is (212) 415-4000 (which connects you with a voice mail menu). The mailing address for Ambassador Burleigh is 799 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017. His fax number is (212) 415-4303.
Another way to express your views to Ambassador Burleigh is to contact your United States Senators or representative. If you don't have their names, call the capitol switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and give them your zip code and they will tell you who your representative is, and who your two senators are. The switchboard is open 24 hours a day.
