The Human Genome Project (HGP) began in October 1990 and is set out to identify the 60,000 to 80,000 human genes and to determine the complete sequence of the three billion DNA units in each human cell. Once completed in its expected time, the year 2005, scientists will be able to detect gene mutations in diseases like Cancer but many people fear that this will lead to easy cloning (Shiloh 8-9). Some major benefits in identifying each human gene will be that scientists will be able to determine how a certain disease contributes to human genes, like cancer, then they can predict that the person is going to have it, and stop it before it becomes dangerous (Shiloh 8-9). When Biologists compare human genomes with those of other organisms they may also gain some insight into the molecular evolution of humans.

Every one has probably heard of the first cloned mammal "Dolly" the lamb in England of 1996 (Baily 52-54). Scientists have been able to clone from other animals embryos’ but what makes Dolly unique is that she was cloned from a single cell. The only major setback to this experiment is that she seems to be aging faster than normal .

Soon after Bill Clinton heard of Dolly he passed a bill stating that human clones will not be able to be "born" but only for the next 5 years. This may prevent scientific knowledge but they are considering the ethics involved with cloning. One objection that the people have argued is that to many people may be similar to each other but scientists say that it is genetically impossible to clone someone mentally similar to some one else. Some people already object to the idea that most people are mentally similar or willing to follow one leader (Shiloh 8-9). A clone would simply be a complete human that shares the same genetics as someone else and that you would treat all clones like you would all identical twins and no one says that twins are unethical (Baily 52-59). Scientists also say that cloning perfectly identical humans in impossible, even identical twins are not identical. A study was done with identical twins showing that they are not identical as far as cognability is concerned, stronger influences are based on education, environment, parental influences and surroundings. Years ago debates on test-tube babies said that combining the sexual cells of humans to create children was , in fact, adultery but today infertile couples bless this technology (Shiloh 8-9). One scientist said that before passing any laws, there should be a debate among scientists, philosophers, academics and other professionals around the world to discuss all the issues (Baily 52-59). There was a conference held in Jerusalem the scientists were unanimous in there decisions to continue research on cloning (Shiloh 8-9).

With cloning technology it will be possible to clone only certain cells from organs in humans producing tissues needed for transplants with organs so organ donors without having to use there entire organ from there body (Baily 52-59). With commercial cloning of cow embryos it will also be possible to produce dozens of cows from a single egg decreasing the cost of cows and increasing meat and dairy productivity (Trebilcock 24-31). Scientists can also create animals with valuable hormones, enzymes and proteins. Cloning will also be very beneficial to childless couples, parents may want to adopt or clone a deciset child (Baily 52-59).

In conclusion the benefits to genetic cloning will be treatment and or cures for many genetically related diseases like cancer, easier organ transplants, increased animal production for food and medicine and children for infertile couples.
