Because it would cause economic shifts if people did not need drugs and such to alleviate their medical problems. The "health of the economy" might be threatened.
The "American way" is (or rather, has become --- as we have been so thoroughly programmed to think) to get in debt, and then work to pay off those debts.
On television, we see an expensive car (for only several thousand dollars --- which we do not have), and we are led to believe it is "freedom" to drive off into the sunset, in debt for it.*
Also we are led to believe that driving a car "with a cool factor of mega-20" is the only way to attract a mate.
(We don't see beyond this smoke screen, that we might well be slaving in a job we don't like and feel trapped in, for five or ten years to pay it off.)
Many of us are not out of our debts yet (much less ahead of the game).
Therefore, the "health" of the economy (as we know it) is severely threatened by any "shake-ups" in our healthcare system!!!!! These sorts of economic shake-ups don't fit in with our zero tolerance factor for change.
Very seriously --- I have talked with several elderly people who say that when they were young, debt was NOT AT ALL "the American way."
I would expound on this, but feel it better for individuals to find elderly people for themselves, and ask them, if they would like this expounded upon.
You can find them segregated away in nursing homes everywhere. Take a notebook with you, and jot down their life stories, if you would like to learn about the richness of life which exists outside of our present-day materialism. (If they are still alive and well enough to give us these sorts of history lessons.)

*In school I remember learning about "supply and demand" and how it operates and effects our economy.
When massive numbers of people become willing to get into debt (instead of buy what they can at the time afford, or pay off immediately if necessary) --- certainly this has effects on the laws of supply and demand.
