I agree that Lee Silver's book starts out slowly. However, I continue to call it "THE BOOK OF THE 20TH CENTURY'.
It was not only visionary in it's championing of cloning, it framed the even more important issues and debate surrounding generitcally engineered children.
Silver's vision of the possibilities and the problems which lie ahead in a future where cloning is considered ordinary but only the wealthy have access to the genetic engineering to give their children exceptional skills has come to shape both debates.
"Remaking Eden" is to the 20th Century what Charles Darwin's "Theory of Evolution" was to the 19th Century. In fact, in the broad sweep of history, "Remaking Eden" will be seen as the "intellectual successor" to Charles Darwin's "Theory of Evolution".
I would certainly read the last half of the book first, beginning with the materials on cloning and then "go back" and read the debates about "when life begins" if that interests you.
The reality is that the last hour long Nightline Special Report, produced a little over a year ago by a documentary maker name Kurlwich for ABC News, was entirely framed by Silver's vision and by what worries him.
My extensive review of "Remaking Eden" can be found under "Reference Materials" at Http://www.clonerights.com
