EditorialPatrick ( 08/26/2003, 04:30:15 )Erin, please. There is no need to apologize. You have your opinions and they're every bit as meaningless as mine or anyone else's. Besides, i rather enjoyed that puppy remark. I don't know how god feels. Never met it. My beliefs are rooted in logic, common sense, and plain old altruism. That's not to say i believe there is no god. I simply think that all those books written thousands of years ago might not be entirely true. No one can know the nature of anything, god or otherwise, as organized religion claims. Anything is true if you believe. If a demented man claims to be John Lennon, to himself he is if he truly believes it, although others might not see it that way. Such is the unique power of faith. The dark side of that is the way faith in one tends to denounce another. True believers think, "If my faith/my god/my lord/my prophet is the truth, the others must be false." So then it becomes, "I want them to get to heaven with me so i must make them believe in my beliefs." Which then morphs into, "Those that don't want to get to heaven with me must want something else, which must then mean they want something wrong, so i must show them the light." Which concludes with, "Well. If they won't see my god my way, they must be destroyed to save their souls." I'll grant you this is a grossly oversimplified demonstration (i don't want to upset any religious folk). This is just an illustration of my view of religion in general. I have come across too few people willing to simply say, "Live and let live. Believe and let believe." The zealots would say, "Believe and make believe." How interesting... make believe.Hmm. I think i'm finished now.*Disclaimer - This has been a pointless editorial for the use of provocation of argument.
