Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: Defective Babies

libfemme ( 09/24/2003, 12:38:51 )

Have they got all the bugs out of "natural" process? Have you any idea how many birth defects there are naturally? Do you know how many eggs die for every "natural" pregnancy?I am not arguing in favor of birth defects. I am arguing in favor of accepting the fact that we don't know how to make a perfect human being nor should we stop making humans beings until we do.The questions is what is an acceptable risk? And that hinges on accepatable to whom? It's easy to dismiss other people's emotions and say "oh so and so shouldn't have children". Then you go on your merry way, but so-and-so is the one who has to live day by day with the knowledge they will never have a child of their own to hold and love. Maybe it is unfair that all of us are born with instincts to reproduce. But the fact is that's the way we are made.Women, naturally, have instincts to nurture and become mothers. Not at every stage of their life certainly. And there are a minority of women who willing choose never to have children. But that said, they majority of normal women and men, at some time in their lives long for and have children. Getting married, raising a family is a normal heterosexual life style.I don't say that everyone must have children. That would be cruel to tell someone else what to do with their personal life. By the same tokem I would never tell someone else that they cannot have children. That would be equally intolerable. There is such a thing as a 'biological clock'. People, like all animals, are programmed with certain instincts. They can override those instincts in certain cases. People can refrain from sex, or marriage, or children. People can control their behavior. But refraining form the action does not end the instinctual drive, and hence the emotional baggage attached to it.Some people can refrain from having sex. It doesn't kill their sex drive. Some people can refrain from eating. It doesn't make their hunger go away. You see what I mean? Some people cannot have children. It doesn't mean they stop wanting them, stopping trying to conceive or don't ache everytime they see a healthy mother who is luckier than they are.
