Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Defective Babies

libfemme ( 09/24/2003, 01:41:40 )

Is making an imperfect baby immoral? Critics of human cloning point to the fact that we can not guarantee that a cloned baby will be without defects as a reason to outlaw the procedure. However, babies conceived inside women naturally) have defects too! Do we suggest that parents who conceive naturally are being irresponsible? Taking an unwarranted risk with their future child's health? It's time to acknowledge the fact that every one of us has some sort of medical defect in our DNA. For some of us it is diabetes. For others it is heart disease. For all of us it is cancer. After all, eventually all of us die. That's a 100% defect rate over time. Do couples stop having sex because we are not a perfect species? Of course not.Everyone would like to have children that are 100% healthy. But no one ever has and no one ever will. We don't put a death penalty on children who are born with defects, congenital heart problems, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, Down's syndrome, etc. Why should we enforce a 'no-existence' penalty on the unborn cloned children who have parents ready to love them and bring them into life? The very thing we fear--inhumanity--is what we practice when we ban reproductive cloning
