Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Better off dead

libfemme ( 09/24/2003, 12:14:10 )

This is the better off dead argument. It goes that people who have birth defects, or are crippled, or have illnesses are better off not existing at all. This idea, however, is always expressed by outside people not the person involved. For instance your half sister has severe birth defects, you say. Why hasn't she committed suicide then? Obviously, life is still worth living to her. Would you suggest that diabled people be put to death, for instance? I don't think you would. Although that was the argument of certain Nazi's in the 30's. Imperfect people, by their standards, shouldn't exist. But the individual involved doesn't necessarily agree. People have lost limbs, been in heart-lung machines, etc. and still want to go on living. Their life may not be as perfect as yours but it is still a life and it is better than the alternative, being dead! Why do we bother picking up men wounded on the battlefield? Or people in car accidents? Why don't we sufficate babies born with Down's syndrome. They do in communist China for instance. They practice a barbaric ideology called eugenics, the idea that certain people shouldn't be allowed to reproduce, and the state should use force to prevent them.Obviously your half sister is normal in that she loves children. She wants to have a family. Why should she be denied that right, that comfort and enjoyment just because it makes you feel uncomfortable thinking about it? You are not the one being hurt. Leave them alone, in the hope that someone else won't judge you asless than perfect as well and unworthy of life as well.
