Cloning Ban as Farce
libfemme ( 09/26/2003, 04:28:13 )Doctors who assist infertile couples in having a family are among the most aggressive and successful in developing new techniques. Success, however, breeds jealousy. Government regulators have been trying to rope in fertility clinics in the same way they have drug companies years ago. A great deal of the energy behind the anti-cloning rhetoric we hear over the media has been generated not by people worried about cloning per se. Instead it is a deliberate, political strategy. They criticize anything a fertility clinic might do in order to whip up public support for regulating them.The Canadians are arguing over a ban on cloning right now. As one fertility doctor was reported in the media,“They (the government) got themselves in a real mess. The problem with it is they mixed in cloning with trying to regulate the assisted reproductive technologies."The public's emotions are being manipulated with scare stories in order to get them to support regulation of fertility clinic through the backdoor.Whether or not you support human reproductive cloning you have a stake in what is decided in Ottawa, Washington and Sidney. Regulation and control of fertility doctors is just the nose of the camel. If bans are passed we can see regulations put on all doctor’s use of new medical techniques. Decision by bureaucratic will replace practice by a licensed physician who knows his patients personally and also takes the legal responsibility for wrong decisions!If a ban on cloning succeeds it will be the worse possible political and medical nightmare.
