The Reason For Late Term Abortion

libfemme ( 10/01/2003, 02:39:09 )

I'm sorry I did not see this post of yours earlier. I can only tell you what I have read about late term abortions. Supporters of "partial-birth legislation" say they are targeting a particular procedure known as "dilation and extraction" (D&X). The D&X procedure amounts to less than 0.05 percent of all abortions. Late term abortion is dangerous to the life of the mother, so it is rare for a physican to risk performing it. Only 14 clinics nationwide will perform D&X, which means over half of women in the US would have to go out of state if they need it. In 1996 that was about 650 women of the 1.37 million abortions performed. The Women's Health Care Services of PA has performed about 2,210 late term abortions over the last 13 years, from January 1989 to May 2002 "...in such situations as anencephaly, Trisomy 13, 18, and 21, polycystic kidney disease, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, Potter's syndrome, lethal dwarfism, holoprosencephaly, anterior and posterior encephalocele, non-immune hydrops, and a variety of other very significant abnormalities."Categories of fetal anomalies, in descending order of frequency:Central Nervous System (42.9%) Genetic (19.4%) Skeletal (9.5%) Cardiac (5.4%) Renal (4.2%) Pulmonary (1.4%) Fetal infection (1.3%) Gastrointestinal (1.2%) Premature Membrane Rupture (1.1%) Twin/Twin Transfusion (0.4%) Other / Miscellaneous (13.2%) Average gestation: 27 weeks (range: 15-38 weeks81% were for married women. A third of them Catholic. You can check out the rest of the statistics for this center at the link below.
