Parhaps one day...Patrick ( 10/01/2003, 07:01:32 )...you'll get off that intellectual trip of yours and answer an honest question. WHAT GOOD DOES ANY OF THIS RESEARCH STAND TO DO FOR THIS PLANET WE CALL HOME? You seem to have all the answers, so it shouldn't be that difficult. I must be an imbecile by comparison because, despite countless hours of contemplation, i couldn't even come up with a truly stirring argument for the continuation of our existence. Simply, our existence has been nothing but trouble since we first developed civilization. That took place how long ago? Maybe five or ten thousand years? Big deal. How many species currently exist which have been around for millions? How many were around for millions before going extinct millions ago?So you know what? To hell with it. Let's just keep on going, find a cure for death, while assuring everyone the chance to have perfect little babies of their own so we can all go on multiplying unchecked, poisoning ourselves and each other and our planet and inflate the population until the earth can no longer support us and we descend into some wild world war over what little resources remain and suffer and murder and plunder and die. Sounds peachy. You once wrote, "People who encourage others to end their life, shorten their life, declare life bad are in my opinion basically evil. What God do you serve when you advocate the elimination of individual life for the benefit of some non-entity such as the "world"." The part that really gets me is: You are a biology teacher. Instructor of the study of life. Yet you refer to the world, without which there would be no life for you to study, as a non-entity, as though it were some lofty theory of the origin of life in general. Well, planet Earth is a very definite entity. It has existed for billions of years compared to our, what? hundred thousand? quarter million? Humankind's existence here has been a mere blip on the charts of cosmic history. So what's so special about that?I am no environmentalist. I drive a car, barbeque animal flesh, waste what i don't use and participate in the very system of consumerism i have learned to despise. I am a hypocrite. I can accept that. So if i am blind, what then are you? Not about to answer a guy's plea for understanding. That seems certain. What good would that do? I am no nihlist, either. If i were, i wouldn't waste my time posting on any message board trying to demonstrate alternate points of view. You should stop analyzing my philosophy and answer my question. Or...What do you do when your students ask you questions you can't answer? Try to humiliate them in front of their classmates? Try to fail them when they attempt to prove you wrong? I had a physics teacher like you, once. She had to be right, even when proven wrong. She tried to fail me, in spite of my outstanding test grades and research papers. Her arrogance lost her her job. I pitied her. Not for losing her job but for her arrogance, much as i pity you now. You'll go on living, making those who see things differently the butt of your ridicule, enjoying your security with yourself and your arrogant beliefs, while trying to tell others what they believe. My sarcasm was all in good fun, not a personal attack, and my simultaneous apology was sincere. You're just too uppity to understand, i guess, so i retract my apology to you. So now i bet you'll continue to ignore my very simple question and try to find another, even more clever way to bash my character. Bring it. I think, though, that there are a number of other people who'd like to hear your response and i submit you'll look quite the fool if you fail to oblige. Either way, i wish you the best.
