Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Rabbit Eggs Used to Grow Human Stem Cells

libfemme ( 10/04/2003, 02:39:07 )

If harvesting human eggs is both controversial and expensive using the eggs of rabbits or other animals to clone human genes may become more practical.Chinese researchers report taking eggs from a rabbit's ovaries. Suctioning out all the rabbit DNA until all that was left was basic cell cystoplasm and organelles. They then took the human skin cells, and suctioned out the DNA in the nucleus of the human cell and injected it into the empty rabbit egg cell. The egg cell now has only human DNA and therefore can only make and replicate human cells.China is investing aggressively in biotech research. Last year, spending on biotech totaled $272.4 million, up from $31.5 million in 1986.The Chinese program is headed by Australian and American trained researchers. Foreign born students who are educated in Western Universities may be the first to apply certain stem cell techniques and establish China as an important center of theraputic cloning treatments.China bans human reproductive cloning at present, but it will be interesting to see what develop in the next few years.
