Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Technology Increases Yields

libfemme ( 10/06/2003, 02:23:10 )

Yes, the UK and Europe are particularly suspicious of genetically modified crops. In the UK protestors burn crops in the fields. While in the US children have been eating GM corn flakes for 10 years with nary a political protest! So strange the difference in reactions to two biotechnologies: cloning and GM foods, between the two different groups of people. But then the US got started by people who didn't get along in Europe! So I guess we should expect the two groups to come out on opposite sides on issues still.Monsanto says: More than one-fifth of the global crop area of soybeans, corn, cotton and canola acres are now biotech. Nearly 6 million farmers in 16 countries chose to plant biotech crops in 2002, up from 5 million farmers in 13 countries in 2001. More than three-quarters of these farmers were resource-poor farmers in developing countries. In China, farmers growing Bt cotton increased their income an additional $200 per acre or $750 million nationally. The study reports similar results in South Africa, where half of farmers are women. The reduced insecticide sprays required with Bt cotton allow the farmers more time to care for their families or generate additional income from other activities. “We can attend to other things besides staying in the field,” says T.J. Buthelezi, a cotton farmer from the Makhatini Flats of South Africa. “Our standard of living is very much improved when we have money to send our children to school.” This the reason farmers adopt new technologies, machination, hybrid seeds and now GM seeds. The more food you can grow on the same amount of land, the more money you make. And the more money you make the more children you can support. This is why the industrial & agricultural revolution that started in the 18th century has also lead to a increase in the world population.Malthus saw only half of the equation. He noticed that the population was increasing in 18th century England. But he didn't ask why. People have always reproduced to the maximium of their ability. Birth Control was not readily available if not immoral at the time, why should the populating suddenly start to increase? The reason is because the industrial revolution and the agricultural revolution which was a part of it was increaseing the amount of wealth in the nation. There was more food to buy and more money to buy it with. There were more poor people because the poor benefitted so much from increased crop yields.Malthus just looked out his window and say "Egad! Look at all those poor people increasing! They'll eat us out of house and home."For an economist Thomas Malthus wasn't very observant. Adam Smith, his contemporary, was the smart one.
