Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Increase the yield

libfemme ( 10/04/2003, 07:00:39 )

Increase the yield of the plants you grow.Have you ever seen baby corn? It's around 3 inches long and very small around with tiny seeds. That is what wild corn looked like hundreds of years ago. However farmers breed corn to increase it's size. That means out of an acresworth of corn harvested the smallest ears and the largest ears were separated. The smallest ears you ate. The largest ears you used as seed and planted again. That meant that your next year's crop would be only from the larger ear plants and you crop yield would be greater. Then you repeated the process. Our of this slightly larger second year crop you picked the biggest of the big and those are the one's you planted. That is called selective breeding and it is why American or Western crops are often larger in size than plants grown third world countries. For every acre of land planted in the West, more food is harvested than on an equal size plot of land in an undeveloped country.Another problem that reduces how much food is produced is all the food that pests like mice and insects in the field eat. Certain plants have been genetically altered now so that they don't taste as good or other repel these field pests naturally.Genetically modified (modified means to change) crops or GM crops make a large portion of the agriculture in the US and is another reason why the US grows so much food that it exports to other countries. So as technology increases the yeild that can be harvested from one small patch of ground it is increasing the total amount of food in the world.
