A Theory Isn't a Doubt

libfemme ( 10/08/2003, 09:31:00 )

No dearheart, evolution is not "just a theory". The common usage for the word theory has nothing to do with the scientific definition of the word.Scientists use theory to mean a complete system for explaining something, as opposed to an explanation for only one isolated event. For instance, there is the Graviation Theory not because there is no proof for the existence of gravity but because a Theory is a complicated set of rules that explains the motion of all objects, on the planet and off. You know the rules, the theory, you don't have to explain the action of every stick, stone and apple on the planet. You don't have to explain why water runs downhill and cannon balls fall to the ground in an arc. You can explain all such seemingly different phenonmena by One Theory, the Gravitational Theory.Scientific and medical dictionaries define words in very specific ways which have nothing to do with the willy-nilly way the general public may or may not use them. Words in common usage change meaning depending upon fashion and change in culture. That's why Shakespeare is so hard to understand now. The common way of talking has changed. Common talk always does that. But scientific terms do not change. They are defined exactly and used the way they are defined by scientists. Which is why scientists can understand each other, and why they can understand Newton's explanation of gravity despite the fact that he formed them over 400 years ago while modern audiences have difficulty understanding Shakespeare's dialog. Scientists know what Newton meant by terms and they still mean that in scientific parlance today.A scientific theory is an all emcompassing set of rules and explanations as opposed to an explanation of only one instance. You can explain how one particular frog jumps by observing him. But when you explain why all varieties of frogs and toads, even the individual ones you have not seen, will be similiar in behavior you are describing the all overarching theory. A theory explains the general instead of the specific. Evolution is a theory not because scientists doubt that it is true but because it is a system of explanations that can explain all of life's diversity.Like the words Set Theory is mathematics. Mathematicians aren't doubting that sets exist when they use the word theory. They use theory to mean the big explanation.
