The Need For Other People's Babieslibfemme ( 10/02/2003, 10:30:52 )A topic keeps coming up in one form or another so I think it is time i weighed in on this issue. The question often asked is: Do we need more babies?Depends. Whose babies are we talking about, yours or mine?Think about it. If your answer can change depending upon whether we are asking if your baby needs to exist or if we asking if someone else’s baby needs to exist then you need to take a hard look at what your true motivations are.Let me explain why. We, meaning human beings, are descendants of other, less human, species. As individuals we still carry some of these non-human instincts. (Well they are not really non-human if we have them. But I mean that they are not specific to humans and therefore did not originate from the higher order thinking ability unique to humans.)What is the nature of these pre-human instincts? Life has been a struggle. Or more exactly, those living things that were born with aggressive instincts tended to survive over weaker individuals. Those animals who “felt” (instincts are experienced as feelings) that the existence of other animals got in their way for mates, territory and resources etc tended to aggress on those other animals and, it seems, won. We are the descendents of the winners of the past. Since we are indisputably here, we must of necessity be the direct descendents of the winners in the game for survival not the losers. We have inherited the winner's aggressive and self-centered worldview. However, we are also human beings. We are more than the sum total of our animal pasts. We have the ability to reason, evaluate and put aside our base animal instincts. We have the ability but we don’t apparently always use it.Statements that begin “What good is __________ to me” are throwbacks to our animal-eat-animal past. It implies that other people serve our need or they don’t have a right to exist. It is barbarism in its most elemental form.I would not want to live in a society in which people had to justify their existence on the basis of someone else’s need for them. That leads to slavery.Nor would I want to live in a society where people had to justify the existence of their child before reproducing. That has a name. It is eugenics. Eugenics is the ideology that other people should not reproduce if they don’t benefit some purpose which usually goes by the name ‘society”, the “race” or other code words. A society in which there are laws against some people reproducing because other people in the society object to their genes are practicing eugenics. Communist China is the only country I know of at present that has taken the right to reproduce from the individual and given it to the state. Chinese ideologists have blatantly said in print that they favor eugenics. The cloning ban bill passed by the US House last year, had it been enacted into law would have made it a criminal offense for people to reproduce their own genes. The only thing that offends the US House about these babies is what genes they have. Legally restricting reproduction based on someone’s genes is eugenics. I find what the US House attempted to do abhorrent, and thank the wisdom of the founding fathers for having established a bicameral legislature. How then should people's existence be justified? They don't need to. You are your own justification for existing. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
