Sex is a Big Taboo
libfemme ( 10/12/2003, 19:07:01 )Sex has always been a big taboo subject with the Catholic Church. Although a vow of celibacy actually referred to the fact that priests were not allowed to marry. It was the vow of chastity that meant they were not to have sex.I do not, however, believe that the sex scandals of the church are due to their not being able to marry. Most men are single for part of their lives and yet never once experience a desire to abuse children.I believe it is the other way around. Men who are haunted by sexual desires for children cannot function with adult women and so don't want to marry. They are drawn to the priesthood because it gives them a respectable career without having to explain why they don't marry. I don't think the priesthood makes them child abusers. I believe that child abusers are born and gravitate to the priesthood.Abusing children is not something that most people could force themselves to even think about, let alone do. I don't believe that normal people suddently become pedophiles because they are denied adult partners. There are plenty of nuns and women in the church to have affairs with if a Priest truly was attracted to them.Also the priesthood holds out the hope of redemption for some of them. If some one is haunted by sick thoughts that they dare not tell anyone about then the idea of entering the priesthood might be their way of seeking a cure. If they truly believe that their desires are a sin, instead of a sickness, then entering the priesthood would give them the most opportunity for pentence.As fewer men have chosen to go into the priesthood as a career now a days, that leaves behind the desperate ones. The number of priests is smaller,the sexual abusers are concentrated now.
