Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Reducing Risks

libfemme ( 10/12/2003, 03:29:03 )

You are making the assumption that every baby born naturally is perfect. That’s not true. Even healthy naturally born babies harbor some family gene that will eventually kill them. After all how many people are alive today who were born before 1850? None of them. That’s a 100% death rate in every generation. Everyone dies eventually. If they don’t die of trauma or infection, they will eventually die of old age. That means all of us have fatal genes somewhere along the line. But more than that we also have non-fatal imperfect genes also. Many people have allergies or are susceptible to allergies during their life time. Most people have susceptibility toward obesity. Many people are born with a susceptibility to diabetes. All of us are born with different mental abilities. The point is you can decide anything is a birth defect if you want to go looking for it. If we apply one standard to judge the health of cloned babies we should use that same standard to judge naturally concieved babies. No one can predict how a naturally conceived baby will turn out either. There is a certain degree of risk in having a natural baby. Why? Because there are no perfect set of genes. The incidence of developing mental abnormalities in natural sexual reproduction in humans is 3%. We don’t like the fact that any baby is born with mental abnormalities, but we don’t ban sexual reproduction because there is a 3% risk of mental abnormalities developing every time a man and a woman have normal sex. The spotlight on abnormalities among assisted reproduction is so much higher because we know so much more about the process. We’re appalled at how many eggs don’t fertilize in assisted reproduction but we are never appalled at the number of eggs that don’t fertilize in natural sex. Do you think every sex act naturally results in a pregnancy? What happens to those natural eggs? What percentage is an acceptable risk? When it comes to normal sexual reproduction you accept 100% risks without condemnation, but when it comes to assisted reproduction you will accept only zero risks. That tells me it is not the risks that is your real opposition to cloning. If cloning made 100% perfect babies that would appall you even more.Your opposite is in learning that reproduction is not as mysterous as you wanted to believe and it kept shrouded in mystery even if that means keeping our present levels of health problems and unhappiness. Suffering is good because God ordained that man should suffer for Adam’s sin. It is cloning reducing the risks of birth defects that you fear the most.
