Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: Women free at last!

Bravo Neptune! You can think out of the box. I agree that you shouldn't have to find a man before your fertility disappears. I also know some people who believe in single parenthood. they think it is unfair that they have to "go out and find a member of the opposite sex to reproduce" when they would be very happy to raise a later-born twin of themself. I agree single parenthood is more difficult and probably not the best choice for many people. However, why should Rosie O'Donald and others with ample resources have to go to a sperm bank and "pick" the father of their child on the basis of "known facts". "Known facts" might include that person's IQ, musical tastes, career achievements, etc. However, each of us have had eight great-grandparents. How many can tell us the age those great grandparents died? If they sufferred from diabetes, mental illness, breast cancer, etc. We simply don't know. Therefore, "Mr. Perfect" from the sperm bank might be carrying all sorts of recessive genes which, with bad luck, could match up with some of your won recessive genes and you could end up having a child with some terrible handicap or condition. As a single woman, would you want to raise a mentally retarded child sired by someone who looked promising. Or would you rather raise a later-born twin of yourself, a child you would fully understand and have much in common with? Single parenthood will be one of the ultimate luxuries after cloning is perfected.
