Illegal Beings: Human Clones

"Rapture:How Biotech Became The New Religion"

Randolfe ( 10/31/2003, 12:21:50 )

There is a new book out by the writer who did a ground-breaking report on cloning in Wired Magazine. The title is the topic of this message. Brian Alexander, the author argues that many diverse philosophies--early science dreamers, science fiction writers, etc. merged with fringe movements like cryonics (freezing at death to be revived later), cloning, life-extension, Extropians, etc. and finally with real scientific discoveries and biotech venture capitalism and a broad-based movement calles Transhumanism to essentially become a "new religion". Actually, he is arguing that all these disparate groups and scientific dreamers have essentially made "a religion" of science. A lot of people involved in these disparate ventures very much dislike that comparison. "Rapture" in his mind is the impossible becoming possible through new scientific discoveries and technologies. It is a great book even if his eight page description of my activities as a human cloning activist left much to be desired. But the question he raises is interesting: Have increasing numbers of people come to embrace science as a "religion" even though they might not like it to be described in those terms?
