Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: Women free at last

Randolfe ( 10/30/2003, 09:41:10 )

I used women as an example because single parenthood is easiest for women. As a matter of fact, the one horse which was cloned was a later-born twin of the mother horse which carried her. Previously, some wondered if a female mammal could carry its own clone. Men could also have the same option if they had the financialo resources. And those resources would be very expensive. First a male would need an egg donor. Today, fertility clinics pay egg donors $5,000 per cycle and some women pay their way to college by donating eggs. After getting an embryo cloned (which would also involve the fee for the professional services of the fertility doctor doing that procedure, a male would have to hire a surrogate mother to carry the child for twelve months. This could cost $20,000 to $100,000 depending on the services used. Finally, a later-born twin of a male would have 25 or 30 genes from the donor egg's mitochondria. That is a very small genetic contribution considering human beings have 30,000 genes. However, it would mean that the later-born twin would not be the totally 100% copy a woman would get by carrying her own later-born twin. Basically, yes, both sexes could achieve single parenthood through cloning. It would just be much easier and less expensive for women.
