Illegal Beings: Human Clones

How do you tell a grieving mother "No"?

Randolfe ( 10/31/2003, 12:33:16 )

I constantly find myself dealing with grieving parents who desparately want to clone a dead child. As a cloing advocate, it is a wonderful feeling to find others passionately embracing something you believe in. However, as a realist, you have to gently tell such poeple that the reality is that cloning is not yet a viable option. The last woman I counseled fell for a phony story that another grieving mother had managed to become pregnant with identical triplets of her dead daughter. For a couple weeks, before she discovered it was all a scam, she was dancing around her house with visions of having identical triplets of her dead son to raise and love again. Even after discovering that cloning was not viable at this time, she wanted to retrieve samples from the Medical Examiners Office and have them saved for "possible future cloning". Ultimately, I had to tell this woman that (given the fact she was of limited means and putting her daughter through college) that she would be better advised to invest the same money in her living daughter's education. Being a "realistic" cloning advocate sometimes requires both a soft heart and a strong mind.
