Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: The Cons of Cloning

Randolfe ( 10/30/2003, 09:56:32 )

Well, there are the invalid "cons" about cloning. People will tell you that it is unnatural, against God's will, etc. These arguments are nonsense. Cloning occurs in nature ever time a pair of identical twins are born, even time you make a new plant by using a cutting. However, there are (at present) legitimate concerns regarding cloning. As a procedure, it is very inefficient. It would be very expensive. Depending on the animal, it can result in animals with disabilities. Sometimes, in cows, it can be dangerous to the mother carrying the cloned embryo. The problem is that moralists who are just against cloning on religious grounds dig up the worse studies they can find in mice and cattle, then assume the results will be the same in humans. No one really knows. The real ethical question is who decides whether someone can reproduce through cloning if they are willing to take the risks, know the dangers and accept responsibility for the resulting child, the person/couple or a bunch of politicians at the state or national level? One thing we know in science is that results in animals do not predict the outcome in humans. That is why we have studies of drugs in humans, not just in animals. The problem is that cloning is such an emotionally charged area that people seem incapable of thinking rationally about it.
