Illegal Beings: Human Clones

States Will Lead Stem Cell Research

libfemme ( 11/10/2003, 00:33:23 )

There is simply not enough support in the US to pass a complete ban on cloning. If there were then abortion would already be illegal. Support for both bans comes from the same constituents. The religious right is a very active and vocal group in the US, but try as they might they are no where near the majority. GW Bush was elected by more than just the support of the religious right, and even at that his margin of victory was so small that the election was contested for several weeks. There is no support in the US to ban all cloning. The very most Bush can do is withhold federal money going to research in this area. But there are plenty of other sources of money in the US. Private foundations, wealthy individuals and corporations doing research for profit fund research also.In addition there is money from state treasuries which Bush has no control over. California is the first state to allow state funds to be given for stem cell research. New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Illinois are considered bills encouraging stem cell research this year. While legislators in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Washington have introduced bills to permit research in their territory.Like the UN, the US has internal competiting interests. No one wants to ban research in their state only to see biotech businesses and taxes move to another.
