Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Borders can be crossed

libfemme ( 11/04/2003, 09:05:51 )

"It is not possible in a multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-religious society to have a position which satisfies one segment of society," said Professor Lim Pin, Chairman of Bioethics Advisory Committee in Singapore. So true. A ban on cloning, well on anything these days, only works if it is global. The world is a pretty big place, and there are a lot of people in it. If something can be done, it will be done somewhere, sometime. The problem with cloning is it a fear without a face. Once Christopher Reeves walks again becauae of stem cell therapy, once a mother holds a baby in her arms because of reproductive cloning then the theoretical will become concrete. Then the horror stories will be shown up for what they are...mere shadows.Opposition to cloning, particularly reproductive cloning rests on opposition to use of human embryo's. That rests on a specifically western, Judeo-Christian attitude about cells. The majority of the world is not Christian. It just ain't. That means that keeping cloning illegal indefinately just isn't going to happen. Sooner or later people in non-Christian countries are going to ask themselves "hey why are we avoiding cloning? We don't subscribe to the western religion." When that happens then people in countries that do subscribe to the western religion have a place they can, and they will, travel to to get the medical procedure they need or want. The world is open. Borders are crossable. Physically and mentally. It's only a matter of time. Very short time.
