Oh my gosh, where to begin?libfemme ( 11/04/2003, 08:08:13 )1) First analyize your opponents objection to see if it is unique to cloning. Most arguments against cloning are really arguments against totalitarian government or child abuse or other problems that we have currently without cloning. To be an objection to cloning your opponent must give you an argument that applies only cloning. For instance an argument that cloning kills embryos is not unique to cloning. It is an argument against in vitro fertilization also. It is also an argument against abortion and certain kinds of birth control that prevent attachment of a embryo to the uterus wall such as the coil or the morning after pill. Unless your opponent is opposed to such birth control also then their argument is specious. If the argument is cloning is because it may lead to defective births, ask what percentage of risk is acceptable? Even natural birth leads to birth defects. Should we prohibit women who are diabetic from getting pregnant becuase they have a higher risk of giving birth to babies with overlarge organ syndrome? Should women over 35 be criminalized for trying to get pregnant since the odds of having a down's syndrome baby is greater with the mother's age? If we accept that women can give birth naturally without being 100% certain in advance that there will be no random defects then why do we demand 100% certaintude for infertile women? If the risk of birth defects from cloning were no more than the risks from invitro fertilization or giving birth naturally would you opponent then support cloning? If not, then they are applying a double standard and either they don't know how to calculate risk factors or they are being dishonest. Most arguments against cloning have nothing to do with cloning but with some other aspect of life that we live with now. No one likes babies to be born with birth defects, but then no one suggests their lives are unworthy, that children born with unintended birth defectives should be stigmatized. These are all arguments and issues that exist now, regardless of cloning. Cloning doesn't add any new risk to the human society. But it does put a spotlight on those problems that already exist, that we deny or accept because we have had to. Cloning makes people uncomfortable because it gives control over what was uncontrolable. If one woman can give birth to a healthy baby by cloning, doesn't that make the other woman who gives natural birth to a baby with a birth defect seem callous? You can't be blamed for having a child with an illness if the illness is outside your control. But if one group of mother's start taking an additional precaution, i.e. having their embryo's examined before implantation, doesn't that make the woman who doesn't have her embryo's examined look like a less caring mother? A secret competition is going on that the natural mother does not want to acknowledge or look at. She fears she will be outstripped in the baby genetics game and so wants to but obstacles in the way of her "competition", After all objecting to cloning babies, is an objection to other people having babies. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
