Re: Playing God?SC ( 10/30/2003, 04:48:08 )If you want me to agree or disagree that cloning humans is playing God, maybe you should first define what you mean by playing God.By asking the question, you imply that if we don't clone people, we are not playing God. If by playing God you mean determining our lives as humans, we play God every time we exercise free will and make a decision. If you wait for a train on a platform, aren't you playing God? After all, you could tear up your ticket and go back the way you came, or jump in front of the train before it comes to a stop. Who are you to determine whether you will go on living, where you will travel, and what experiences you will have; who are you to determine which memories you will gain and lose, and which version of yourself you will create by making those choices?Every decision I make, every moment of my life, involves the destruction of one potential version of myself and the creation of another. As I see it, we are involved in a continuous process of destruction and creation, not just when we are born and when we die, but every day. Every day, some version of ourselves "passes on." I think that people generally do accept that, because they tend to be bored without the changes that new experiences bring. Cloning won't stop people from passing on; in fact, it can enlarge the number of choices people have in terms of how they pass on. The more choices people have, the more chances they will have to truly embrace change.Your apparent unwillingness to recognize the contradictions within your own message, and your practice of posting an identical message again and again, say to me that you are the one who is refusing to pass on. You are clinging to a version of the life cycle that has not always existed in its present form and will probably change in the future. How will you go to a better world if you can't let go of a worse one, not just when your body expires, but right now? Being less driven by instinct than other living things, having greater intelligence and potential to modify our behavior, is largely what makes us human. Asking "Who are we as humans to determine our lives?" therefore sounds like nonsense to me. Determining our lives is what makes us human. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
