Eternal life and being reborn are Christian concepts, much like cloningSC ( 10/15/2003, 05:20:57 )I think there are plenty of ways that cloning could be considered compatible with passages in the Bible. The Bible presumably says that eternal life is a good thing to strive for, since it's presented as the ultimate reward. Revelations says that heaven and earth will eventually be indistinguishable from each other, that there will be a generation of people on earth who never die, and that they will live free from death and disease. That's what the Lord's Prayer means when it says, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."There is also a passage in which a Jesus says "you must be reborn," and a man asks him how this could be physically possible. Cloning is obviously a form of rebith, a means of creating a literal "born again Christian."In the parable of the Great Supper, Jesus describes how a man throws a free feast and invites everyone to come, but all the pillars of the community are too busy doing respectable things, so he throws the doors open and lets people in off the street. This is presumably a metaphor for the way Christians are supposed to be ready to receive God's invitation to heaven at any time. Of course, as Jesus said, "Many are called but few are chosen." Most people are too busy making money to be ready to go to heaven. Religious institutions, like many businesses, have become so accustomed to making money from death that now they don't know how to stop promoting it.The Catholic Church brought in celibacy so that priests would have no descendants to inherit their property. Indulgences were also brought in to raise money. If people live longer lives, and if they in fact live so long that life on earth comes to resemble that in heaven, the Catholic Church will fear that it won't gain as many converts because new Catholics won't be bred as quickly and fewer people will die and leave their money to the church.Jesus threw the moneychangers out of the temple, and he knew that many upstanding citizens were far from holy. That doesn't mean that Christianity has nothing to offer. Christians are just failing to live up to their religions' ideals, as many of them always have.I have talked with atheists who are so opposed to cloning that they sound like religious fanatics. I don't think it's fair to blame religion for all the opposition to cloning. Religion essentially came up with the concept in the first place. There's too much infighting among groups who are dedicated, or ought to be dedicated, to making cloning a reality. They, like the people who wouldn't come to the banquet, are so worried about patenting and making money that they are making it harder for cloning to become a reality. What's the point in having money, if you delay the discoveries needed to keep you alive, and you can't take the money with you when you die? ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
