Yes.The hippocampus seems to be involved in severe mental illnesses. In schizophrenia and severe depressions the hippocampus appears to shrink. There is evidence that this shrinkage can be prevented in people with depression if they are taking antidepressant medications and perhaps in those with bipolar disorder if they take lithium. The hippocampus can be injured by too little blood flow, Alzheimer's Disease, and epilepsy -- which has some striking similarities to bipolar disorder.However hippocampus is also known to be directly affected by estrogen. There is research on the role of estrogen in preventing Alzheimer's; on its role in causing seizures, and on the relationship to "trophic" molecules that are now thought to potentially be the basis of depression and the protection against depression.
