Illegal Beings: Human Clones

I'll See it When I Believe It

libfemme ( 11/12/2003, 00:55:49 )

Holding preconceived notions can block you from recognizing what is right before your eyes. In an instructive lesson for all of us scientists have only recently discovered that they have missed for centuries one of the important examples of natural cloning. For 100 years people may have observed reproductive cloning but did not recognize what they saw. Much of our knowledge printed in textbooks of how embryos grow has come from studying sea urchin development. During their immature stage three groups marine animals--sea cucumbers, sand dollars, and sea urchins usually swim and feed for several months before transforming into a miniature adult. What scientists have found out is that during this time some of the young form an outgrowth -- essentially a ball of tissue -- that pinches-off of the body and grows into a second, normal-looking junvenile--a clone."These data make it clear that people have likely seen this spontaneous cloning for many years but not recognized it," said Dr Richard Palmer of University of Alberta. "This is a dramatic example of what terrifies scientists the most--when you see things with your own eyes but refuse to acknowledge it. It's a classic example of how deeply held beliefs may actually prevent you from seeing things." Many people in the general public still believe that cloning is "unnatural" or against God's plan or something that is "created" by scientists in a lab without realizing that cloning is what happens all the time in what is undoubtedly the oldest form of natural reproduction.
