It was envisioned to provide propetual lifetime employment for NIH scientists. However, when Craig Venter's private company, Celera, mapped the human genome on its own, President Clinton called a hasty press conference to declare the race between public and private scientists to sequence the human genome a "tie". That was June 26, 2000.Now genome mappers are busy working with newer even faster computers that can sequence a human genome in 24. Now genome sequencers are busy mapping the genomes of specific types of people, different ethnic groups etc.
