Patenting Babieslibfemme ( 12/06/2003, 23:34:26 )Congressmen are being asked to put into law a ban that would forbid the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from issuing patents on human organisms. No such patents have ever been issued. The U.S. patent office has coutinely rejected any patent claim for human beings at any stage of development since 1987.Howver, pro-life Congressman have repeatedly attempted to have this practiced codified into law. Opponents say this just another attempt by the anti-abortion lobby to find every possible way to enshrine into federal law that an embryo is equivalent to a live-born baby. The problem is Biotechnology firms fear the law would then be interrpreted so broadly that it would hinder stem cell research. Although most researches agree that patents should not be issued on human embryos, they think the wording of this particular bill would be too broad and that a ban could be used to threaten current and future medical research on human embryonic cells. The provision has been tucked inside an appropriations bill.If Congress approves the bill as is, it should go to the president this week. If approved, the bill will last only one year unless it is renewed. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
