Medical Care Delayed is Life Deniedlibfemme ( 12/25/2003, 13:38:32 )It’s always a bad thing when someone tries to interfere with academic freedom. There are no angels in this debate. Everyone and I do mean literally everyone in mortal and hence prone to error. There is no decision possible, in this or any other debate, which can be guaranteed not to lead to human suffering.A decision to set road blocks in the path of scientific investigation would not be a “value-free” decision. Lives are at stake. They have been for centuries. The possibility exists for the first time to save the lives of new victims, therefore any suggestion that we stop and think:"Gosh, is it a good idea to actually save lives?" is obscene.Delay can move the salvation deadline, altering who makes it to live and who doesn’t.For instance, approximately 18 million Americans now have diabetes. 8.7% of all Americans over 20 years old. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death The risk for death among people with diabetes is about two times that of people without diabetes.Somewhere, some place a person is dying of diabetes right now. And the clock keeps ticking.Suppose, hypothetically, a cure is 478 days away, and someone you love has 479 days to live, does a delay of one day seem trival to you? It is the difference between life and death. Our lives are measured in time.Consider Tommy Bennett. He was born with Sanfilippo — a syndrome in which an enzyme needed to break down chains of sugar molecules is lacking. The search for a cure uprooted sent his parents on a transcontinental journey to Duke University, where they heard researachers were conducting experimental treatments. Tommy underwent his first transplant a year ago. The trial didn't take. He underwent his three transplant 2 months ago. It seemed to be working. But ultimately it was too late for Tommy. Over Thanksgiving weekend his organs shut down. Tommy died.It is probably too late for his 2 other sibblings as well. Delay is not something that every body can afford. If you are going to stand in the road, make sure you are not blocking someone else's ambulance from making it to the hospital. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
