Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: What ethical standard should publishers and authors meet?

libfemme ( 12/09/2003, 09:13:15 )

I'm afraid I side with SC on this. Quite frankly I am unmoved by the years this author may have wasted or not. If a premise is bad, then the premise is bad. Throw the book out with the rest of the trash. One wouldn't expect a manufacturer to sell cans tainted with food poisoning because they had "so much invested" already.Unless, of course, one had no integrity in one's work. One could write a really juicy story about patients receiving transplanted organs and becoming ghouls, but one shouldn't expect the parents of a 4 year child on a waiting list for a life saving organ to be as entertained by such a premise.Cloning isn't just a thinking person's entertainment to people at this site. There are real people, with real lives at stake here. Clonaid, if your author had done his research, is a publicity front for small time religous cult seeking attention anyway they can get it. Even bad publicity is better than no publicity for the Raelians, since otherwise they are just ignored. There is no evidence, other than hyperbole, that clonaid has the means let alone the knowledge to clone a carrot. Holding them up as the "typical" people who want to benefit from cloning technology is unspeakablely ill-informed to say the least.Like SC, I respect people with principles. Morality matters. While, there is nothing I can do to prevent someone from profiting by pandering to society's prejudices, at least I don't have to accord such a person my respect either.
