Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Cloning on The David Lawrence Show

Great Reads Books LLC ( 12/07/2003, 07:09:32 )

This Wednesday, Dec 10, at 8 pm PT, author J R Lankford will be a guest on The David Lawrence Show, discussing her acclaimed novel, The Jesus Thief.Lawrence will interview Lankford, an engineer turned novelist, in an hour-long technology and issues-based discussion of human cloning and its coming impact on society. Though her novel, The Jesus Thief, is a science fiction, it has been acclaimed in eminent literary and scientific circles for its realistic exploration of the hotbed controversy that human cloning has become. Dr. Felix Rossi, the novel's protagonist, is a wealthy American scientist who attempts to produce a clone -- and not just of anyone. Using DNA stolen from the Shroud of Turin, he sets out to clone Jesus Christ.Farfetched? In theory, maybe not forever. When human cloning technology is perfected, we'll have the ability to clone both the living and the dead whose genes have survived, creating twins a generation or more apart. As for the Shroud, the carbon datings of its linen to the 14th century have recently been called into question so the Shroud's authenticity is an open question once again. And Type AB male blood has actually been found on the cloth. Fortunately, the DNA retrieved is badly fragmented, but will science one day have the ability to clone from less than a complete copy of the DNA strand? The interview will address questions such as:- How is cloning performed? -- 7 steps from cell to clone.- Will clones really be human?- How much will they resemble the DNA donor?- Is identity theft a concern?- Should the DNA of convicted murderers be destroyed?- What about human farming? A battalion of identically perfect soldiers? A university full of Einsteins.- Should the world knuckle down and just ban this?- What about therapeutic cloning -- creating embryos to destroy them for their stem cells? Will it bring mercifuls cures or an ethics nightmare?Tune in Wednesday at 8pm PT/11pm ET on one of the many AM/FM/XM or Sirius Satellite stations around the country that carry The David Lawrence Show, or listen live on the web via links on the novel's website.Excerpts are also there, as well as reviews, and dramatizations of dialogue from the novel, links about cloning, the Shroud of Turin, and other themes in the book. The Jesus Thief is available at all online booksellers and wherever books are sold. The Jesus Thief by J R Lankford ISBN:0971869413, 287pp, hardcover "This is great stuff!" - Amn Library Assn http://www.thejesusthief.com
