Illegal Beings: Human Clones

The need for struggle

SC ( 01/18/2004, 10:39:36 )

I may hear many of the same questions over and over, but I do try to respond to each person in a different way. I may not have answered ToaoM in the way that you would like to be addressed, but you are not the same person and I have built up more of a rapport with you. The first time I addressed you, I was harsh with you, but things improved from then on as I saw more of the person behind the arguments. You stood out because of your writing style, among other things. ToaoM stands out because of posts that express what many people are thinking but few people come out and say. ToaoM said, more or less, "My evil twin came in and took over the computer," and I found that genuinely funny because I see it as true. Metaphorically, it probably happens to everyone at some time or another, especially when we are writing about emotionally charged issues. If someone comes here and throws down a verbal gauntlet, is that person asking to be treated gently? I don't think so. One person argues with me until he/she is satisfied, then another one wants to give it a try. The last few posts I've made have formed a bizarre sort of feedback chain: it's like one poster looks at what I wrote to the last one and thinks, "Hey SC, stop being so mean to him! It's my turn!"Some people are scrappers by nature; they thrive on adversity. Imagining a world in which people are much healthier and don't age just makes them afraid or angry. They wonder what they will do with themselves, how they will fit in when life gets easier. I think some of ToaoM's sentiments, some of your remarks in your first posts, and some of John's sentiments all reflect this concern. So various people (not just you and the ones I named) have come to this board, where there are people who want to see a world without aging made real, and issued challenges in one way or another, not because they want to be part of a nicer world, but because they fear that such a world would be too nice for them to stand. I think they're looking for emotional reassurance that there will still be a place for tough people in a healthier world, and they find this reassurance by struggling against and challenging others. It may seem strange to you, but I am trying to give people what they need, trying to "speak their language" for a little while. However, I consider cloning too important an issue to argue with one person for any extended period, just for the challenge. There are better challenges for you to face than me. If it's any comfort to you, living longer would open up new challenges for people. Space exploration beyond a certain range is unthinkable now because people don't live long enough to make the journey. Many worthwhile long-term projects involved with improving the environment are unthinkable for most people because they don't expect to live long enough to see the results. So if the prospect of longer life concerns you, why not just take on a bigger challenge? Think of something that would take 200 years to accomplish, and get started!
