SC ( 01/29/2004, 07:15:15 )Read down the preceding pages for posts on cloning laws. Laws vary from state to state. Two of the most progressive states are California and New Jersey. Advanced Cell Technologies and Dr. Zavos have grown human cloned embryos to very limited stages of development (there are also posts with further details on this). There probably aren't any babies yet who were conceived by somatic cell nuclear transfer (the technique people are usually referring to when they discuss cloning), although identical twins are natural clones and cell duplication occurs naturally within the body. The Raelians made claims that they cloned babies a year ago, but have provided no proof. People like Zavos have been saying that they were on the verge of cloning a baby for four years or more.The timeframe for passing laws friendlier to cloning in the U.S. will be affected by factors like whether George Bush remains in office, whether cloning breakthroughs are made in other countries, and so on. Many jurisdictions don't have laws about cloning one way or another, so it's not specifically prohibited by law in those places. It's also tough to come up with an enforceable law that allows cloning for one purpose but not another. Techniques which encourage the body to produce more adult stem cells (in effect, to clone itself) have actually been used in medicine for about 20 years.People don't always answer requests like this because the answers have already been posted and they don't want to duplicate what they said before.
