Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Time Travel Twins

boundlesslife ( 02/04/2004, 04:58:22 )

Cloning is a term that began with duplication of cells, where they could pretty much replace each other in tissue, and you couldn't tell the difference, one from another. It was also then applied to computers, where those that were designed to be like the early IBM PC's were supposed to be able to use the same software (except in many cases it didn’t work out that way). With whole human beings, starting with the same genome leads to people that have a lot in common, but also are different in many ways, like even the swirls of hair on the back of the head growing in opposite directions. The book "Entwined Lives" by Nancy L. Segal (about twins) and many others like it point out how different (and at the same time how incredibly similar and understanding of each other) twins with the same genome can be. At most, what's called cloning leads to a new human like an "identical" twin, but with a difference in birth date, so it’s like one of them got transported back in time, and grew up at an earlier age. When the second one is born, the first twin can help the second one "catch up" on what’s taken place, and look out for him or her like one else could, or might want to. Looked at from another viewpoint, far from being an authoritarian parent, the older one is more like a "big brother" or a "big sister". The child can grow up knowing that someone is “there for them” in the way that big brothers and big sisters take care of those younger in the family, but even more so, since identical twins have such similar tastes, attitudes and so forth. This bond may be a way of overcoming the “generation gap” and leading to a far higher state of family stability and integrity than we can presently imagine. [OK, This idea started out as a posting, but it seems to be expanding as I go, so the best thing to do is to stop here for comment, as a posting, and put the rest of it on the Foundation’s website as an essay, with the same title. The essay should be cleaned up and posted within 24 hours, if any of you want to look at it before adding your own thoughts. My thanks for many private email and telephone exchanges with Randy Wicker, which have helped me see things I absolutely couldn’t have, otherwise.] Boundless Life, Fred Chamberlain
