Illegal Beings: Human Clones

US Falling Behind in Science

libfemme ( 02/13/2004, 00:17:21 )

The United States, and the rest of the Western industrialized world is losing its lead in the field of biotechnology. The first successful cloning of human cells occurred not in George W Bush's home country, or in Tony Blair's for that matter but in South Korea.Competition is a powerful force among nations and the US has long had a complacency about being first in technological development. But it's been 30 years since the US was the "first on the Moon." Time marches on, however. I predict that in the intervening months, and particularly years, the American public will become alarmed at realizing they do not have a monopoly on 'smarts', that they have fallen behind in the biotechnology race.Regardless of GW Bush's personal prejudices about what an embryo is, and what it is not, he will be pressured to reverse his opposition to federal funding of research on human embryos.
