Illegal Beings: Human Clones

cloning essay

lioness_20042002 ( 02/08/2004, 01:46:26 )

I wrote my essay, and gave the solutions of what is going on with cloning. But my teacher said need to elabrate more and what kind of laws. Can some one help me with this? Also I need help writing a conclusion. Here is my essay.Should We Permit Cloning? Should Cloning Be Permitted? For years, part of the American public, and humans in general, have been fascinated with the possibility of creating new life. The ethics of cloning has become a great issue in the past few years. The advocates for both sides of the issue have many reasons to clone or not to clone. This is an attempt to explore the pros and cons of cloning and to provide enough information of both sides of the arguments of cloning. Cloning is the process of making a genetically identical organism through non sexual means. There are many kinds of cloning. There is Recombinant DNA Technology, Reproductive Cloning, and Therapeutic Cloning. “Recombinant DNA Technology is when a DNA fragment containing the gene of interest is isolated from chromosomal DNA using restriction enzymes and then bonded with a plasmid that has been cut with the same restriction enzymes. Reproductive cloning is used to generate an animal that has the same nuclear as another currently or previously existing animal. Therapeutic cloning is used for human embryos to study human development and to treat diseases,” (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/tech/resources/Human_Genomes/elsi/cloning. shtml#risks). Those who are affected are humans and animals. “Just a few weeks ago an embryo of a woman and the skin cells of her husband were implanted in the woman’s womb,”(San Antonio Express News). People in Britain thought it is illegal and gross. “In 1997 the first mammal, a seep named Dolly was the first cloned animal with adult DNA. Dolly was cloned reproductively. Just last year February 13, 2003 Dolly had to be put down by lethal injection. She had been suffering from lung cancer and crippling arthritis. Most Finn Dorset sheep live to be eleven to twelve years of age,” (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/tech/resources/ Human_Genomes/elsi/cloning.shtml#risks). Three years ago on January 8 scientist at Advanced Cell Technology announced the birth of Noah of the first cloned endangered animal. Noah is a baby bull guar, which is a large wild ox from India and Southeast Asia. There are many advantages in cloning. One advantage is providing better research capabilities to find cures to many diseases. We clone people and animals with the same diseases as the original animal or human does and see what can cure the disease without doing experiments on the original animal or human. We can also recreate deceased animals and humans. With this no one will ever miss their loved one. Another advantage is we can provide children for women who are single and didn’t wish to artificially inseminate. Finally another example is physical characteristics. For example, if the person lost part of his body, then they could clone the human part, and transplant the cloned body part. So instead they don’t have to get an artificial body part. There are also some disadvantages about this too. A disadvantage is it is unethical. The reason why it is unethical is because some one might take it the wrong way and clone things for the wrong reason. Like since Hitler is dead some one might clone him to rule the world again. Also cloning is very expensive. Possibly cloning in most cases can cost up to $1 million. “It is has been figured in surveys that the group of people that can afford cloning is Caucasian people. The reason it is because there are more wealthy people that are Caucasians,” (DuPrau 62-63). Producing another Hitler is another fall back. Since cloning would only rely on the scientist doing the cloning they would be considered Hitler. What I mean is that the scientist can control the races. If he wanted to he can collect only Mexican genes. Then the Mexican population can overpopulate the world. Finally it is unnatural. It is unnatural because a man and a woman are not producing a baby. The scientist would be the one producing the child. There are some risks involved in cloning. Cloning is highly inefficient. If there was an accident $1 million would be wasted. Also with cloning there are high rates of infection and tumor growth. When Dolly died, she had arthritis and lung cancer. Some other risks would be death and other disorders. All the animals that have died were there early stages of life like around between two and three years old. Since they have died so soon there is no data on how long their life span is. “In Japanese studies about a third of cloned cows have been abnormally large,” (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/tech/resources/Human_Genomes /elsi/cloning.shtml#risks). As of right know there is really no solutions that have been discovered. But there is been some countries that passed that cloning is illegal. It is also illegal in California.
