Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Chicken's Coming Home to Roost

libfemme ( 02/16/2004, 02:35:23 )

I don't usually like to keep grudges but sometimes they are just too fun not to! Many from this website will remember that it was Rudolf Jaenisch of the WhiteHead Institute who lead the scaremongering of cloning in the spring of 2002 that lead to the US House passing a ban on Cloning. (The bill is stalled in the Senate, may it rest in peace). Now, the successful cloning of human cells is announced for the first time in a respected scientific journal, and the researchers are not American. What does the good professor have to say about that?"Government support is key, absolutely," said Rudolf Jaenisch, a cloning expert and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. "In the United States nobody could do this because the United States does not have government support."Well who's fault is that, heh Rudy? The quote is published in Wired, in what is a rather well written article about the fallout from threatening to ban cloning. Note that human cloning is not technically illegal in the US. No actual law has been passed. But the stature of the president of the US government and efforts to ban cloning have had a chilling effect nonetheless.Wired wrote: "The United States is supposed to be the most scientifically and technologically advanced country in the world. So why did South Korean scientists announce here Thursday that they were the first to develop cells that could lead to the biggest revolution medicine has ever seen....[A] key difference between past cloning attempts and the South Koreans' research is that Hwang and his colleagues used cells from the same woman who donated the egg to make the clone. They used cumulus cells, which are found only in close proximity to female eggs, because those cells worked well in previous cloning experiments in animals."The only company publicly dedicated to cloning cells from the person who is also the patient is Advanced Cell Technology (ACT). All sorts of pressure has been put on ACT to keep them from developing this same technology.Rudolf Jaenisch sensationalist testimony and media comments against cloning lead to today's consequences. When you lay down with dogs Rudy....
