libfemme ( 05/29/2005, 19:34:29 )In response to John:Scholars of ancient Hebrew note that there are 2 stories of creation in Genesis, written in different centuries, in different styles and using different favorite words for God.Genesis 1.1 to 2.4 was written during the Jews' Babylonian captivity and describes separating a watery choas. The second story, Genesis 2:4b to 2:25 is older, written when Jews lived in the southern desert. It begins by describing a desert landscape.Creation of Man Genesis 1:27: "So God created man in his own image; male and female he created them." Genesis 2:7: "Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Thus the man became a living creature." Gen. 2: 21-22: "And so the Lord God put the man into a trance, and while he slept, he took one of his ribs and closed the flesh over the place. The Lord God then built up the rib, which he had taken out of the man, into a woman."Tree of Life Genesis 1:27-30 there was no prohibition against the fruit of any tree mentioned. "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase, fill the earth and subdue it, rule over the fish in the sea, the birds of heaven, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.' God also said, 'I give you all plants that bear seed everywhere on earth, and every tree bearing fruit which yields seed: they shall be yours for food.'" In Genesis 2: 15-18: "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and take care of it. He told the man 'You may eat from every tree in the garden, but not from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.'" Order of Creation Genesis 1: heaven and earth, light, vault of heaven, seas and dry land, plants, sun and stars, fish and birds, land animals, and last humans. In Genesis 2: heaven and earth, man, trees and the Garden of Eden, animals and birds, woman.The Bible is an anthology of stories from several authors and several traditions.
