Illegal Beings: Human Clones

INSTANT VIEW-Reaction to human embryo cloning

libfemme ( 02/18/2004, 01:08:34 )

From Reuter's News Service: The following are comments made on Friday on the recent cloning of human embryos by South Korean scientists. SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY'S WOO SUK HWANG, WHO LED THE CLONING RESEARCH:"Some young ladies have a lot of curiosity about reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning and after searching the Web site, primarily, they tried to contact us."U.S. SENATOR SAM BROWNBACK, KANSAS REPUBLICAN WHO HAS INTRODUCED A BILL TO BAN CLONING:"We're seeing women treated as commodities...and the commodification of a women's reproductive system."AXEL KAHN, PROMINENT FRENCH GENETICIST AND HEAD OF THE COCHIN INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR GENETICS, TO EUROPE 1 RADIO:"This method will result in the birth of a cloned child long before the first patient benefits from a therapy derived from this method." SPANISH CONSERVATIVE DAILY ABC IN AN EDITORIAL:"There are ethical objections to therapeutic cloning that cannot be avoided, even if its aim is unequivocably altruistic." DR. BOB GOLDSTEIN OF THE JUVENILE DIABETES FOUNDATION:"If it turns out be true, it's a nice step forward...It's measured scepticism only in the sense that, until these things are repeated (by other scientists), it always makes us nervous."MONSIGNOR ELIO SGRECIA, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE VATICAN'S PONTIFICAL ACADEMY FOR LIFE:"You can't kill human life in the hopes of finding medicines to save other lives...That would be a repeat of what the Nazis did in the concentration camps." FRENCH CATHOLIC DAILY LA CROIX IN AN EDITORIAL:"Won't a first step lead to a second one? One can imagine the pressure from the ailing, their families, couples confronted with sterility and industries excited by the size of the potential profits."SPANISH CENTRE-RIGHT DAILY EL MUNDO IN AN EDITORIAL:"(The successful cloning) opens a horizon of unpredictable consequences, which could even change...ultimately, the definition of human identity."GERMAN RESEARCH MINISTER EDELGARD BULMAHN TO BERLINER ZEITUNG:"Therapeutic cloning is banned in Germany and will stay banned."GERMAN GOVERNMENT ETHICS COUNCIL DEPUTY CHAIRMAN REGINE KOLLEK TO NDR RADIO:"I think and also hope that there are ethical considerations with all this and that worldwide...there will finally be a so-called cloning convention, that means a worldwide ban on reproductive clones."LEADING GERMAN GENE RESEARCHER HANS SCHOELER TO DER SPIEGEL MAGAZINE WEBSITE:"To prove that humans can be successfully cloned you would have to implant a whole army of women with cloned embryos. The result would be multiple miscarriages and deformed babies. Those who wanted to do something like that would spread so much suffering and death throughout the world that they would soon want to distance themselves from their actions."
