From a Bushielibfemme ( 02/16/2004, 01:19:18 )Voting on the basis of one issue is rarely a preferred strategy. Although there are times of crisis, Civil War, Foreign War, etc. when one issue becomes so important that voting on the basis of that one issue becomes necessary. But in general one must make compromises in order to reach a concensus.A concensus, at least an imperfect one, is necessary otherwise society splitters apart. People have different ideas on all issues. Yet all people have to live within the same society. One votes for the candidate that expresses one's most important values, or most pressing issue, and attempts to convert society over the rest of the issues.Intellectual freedom and scientific advancement are very important issues to me. Individual freedom is even more.To the degree that GWB supports unfettering economic development I support him. To my husband, on the other hand, the issue of the war on terrorism is pre-eminent. He supports Bush on the issue of home security.Neither of us support Bush's position on cloning. You make your choices and you take your chances.I have also decided to speak out on the issue of cloning personally. It is not that cloning per se is that important to me, but that it is the current battlefield in the larger issue of intellectual freedom, the freedom to seek the truth about the nature of the world. I support the right of scientific research. In addition, my support of individualism also causes me to argue for the rights of individual parents to choose cloning.I am for those who have not figured it out, a Libertarian, hence the "Lib" in my monoker. My husband, also a Libertarian, (we met on Valentine's Weekend at a LP event 25 years ago) writes occassionally on military and space issues. Same philosophy, different areas of interest.Despite his support of Bush on many issues, he cannot bring himself to actually vote for a Republican. I, on the other hand, am without scrupples.I don't think the issue of cloning is, in final analysis, in Bush's hands. That horse has already left the stable. Too much at stake for too many people. As South Korea's research points out, no president of the United States nor Pope of the Mother Church can control all parts of the globe. We can't control the trade in cocaine. We will certainly not be able to control the trade in biotechnology. The difference is one trade destroys life and another prolongs it. It is a matter of time before stem cell therapy is available in the western nations and cloning for reproduction will follow. Although I predict that reproductive cloning will not last long. With stem cell therapy comes the ability to regenerates testes and ovaries, to create a "germ" cell from a somatic cell. Stem cell technology will allow the creation or regeneration of sexual reproduction via invitro fertilization and eventually natural reproduction for people who are now infertile. ![]() This Message is being posted for educational purposes, as well as for comment and criticism, by the visitors to the HumanCloning.org Foundation website (www.HumanCloning.org ).
