Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: CLONING ACTIVIST COMMENTARY ON KOREA

Nigel Eddis ( 02/13/2004, 12:01:35 )

As always, when one person or group invents something, some other person or group wants to forbid it.The benefits of cloning and stem-cell research seem too obvious to bother arguing about, but inevitably there is a new breed of busybodies called 'Bioethicists' who want to prohibit cloning, or at least to 'regulate' it. And what of 'reproductive' cloning? Why is that so terrible? Suppose someone wants desperately to re-create a lost child - what is so wrong with that? What, for that matter, is wrong with a rich man deciding that he is so cool that there should be a new, younger version of himself? Who is hurt by this? There are millions of people in the world, some wonderful, some indescribably wicked. This fact will not be changed or even slightly influenced by cloning.Furthermore, suppose some extremely brilliant person can be cloned, and then taught by his or her father or mother so that the knowledge and skills they possess are perpetuated, refined and increased? Is that not a benefit to mankind? And anyway, whose business is it? Why do we have this insane urge to prohibit other people from doing things, without the faintest proof that what we are trying to prohibit is in any way harmful? As for the religious, let them by all means avoid 'playing God'. But let them not inflict their religious prejudices on those who do not share them.I am a conservative and a Republican, and I am a supporter of President Bush, but this is one thing on which I profoundly disagree with him.NE New York
