Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: No, but we could be

It's a contradiction in terms to say "it is still a fact that everything we think we know about anything within our realm of existence is still all theory." If we can't be sure of anything, we also can't be sure that we can't be sure of anything! Why is what you say fact, and what everyone else says "just theory?"Theories are ways that observations about the natural world are put into patterns that seem to make sense based on the available evidence. Nothing is ever known beyond a shadow of a doubt in science; however, science does have a system by which some explanations of how the world works are considered more plausible than others. Ideas that are ready for testing are typically called hypotheses. Explanations which have stood the test of time and are supported by evidence come to be referred to as theories. Those explanations which are true in the highest sense of the word are called laws, as in the laws of physics (some sciences have virtually no laws at all). This is not the same way that the word "theory" is typically used in everyday conversation. It may be possible that some intelligent civilization reached our level of development once or several times before and then vanished without a trace, but it's not something that can be proved or disproved with physical evidence. Right now, it's a matter of faith; it's something you choose to believe whether there's a way of proving it or not. It's not a theory in the scientific sense. We can have faith that intelligent life visited us from another planet, but we can't really test whether intelligent life came from other planets without listening for radio communications or going to other planets and looking for it.A society of our level of technological development would leave a lot of very long-lasting artifacts behind. Toilets, for instance, are supposed to be extremely durable. If people had evolved to the point we have almost reached today (where they could put silicon implants in their heads, for instance), I think we would find such things among human remains from past ages.I'm not saying it's impossible that our level of technology has existed before. It's just not the simplest explanation that agrees with all the available evidence. Maybe someday we'll find some of that evidence, but we haven't yet.
