Illegal Beings: Human Clones

Re: ethical issues of cloning

SC ( 03/05/2004, 05:14:40 )

Our ethical and economic systems are based on the premise that we do what we can to promote things like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but in the long run, we're all dead. Once people start to think that maybe we're not all dead so soon or with so much certainty, that requires adjustments to our systems. It doesn't mean that what we want to do is wrong; it means that it's time to change our systems to fit what is right.Worries about overpopulation are common among people who oppose cloning, but cloning didn't give us the population we have today. The people who have the most children are those who live in the most desperate circumstances; they expect that they must have children because otherwise there will be no one to care for them in their old age. The people who live the longest and healthiest lives tend to have the fewest children; in the world's richest countries, populations would actually be shrinking if it were not for the inflow of immigrants from poorer countries. International aid agencies often say that the best way to lower the birthrate in developing countries is to improve the survival rate of children, because parents also conceive "extra" children because they expect some of them to die young.Cloning is likely to change people's expectations about how long they will live, but that will encourage them to have fewer children, not more. When people expect to live longer, they are more likely to think about the future consequences of their actions, because they expect that they will still be around when "what goes around comes around." The people who do the most damage to their environments are those who have no hope for the future.I wouldn't have much to do if there were only pro-cloning people here. It's because there are so many people who are misinformed about cloning that I devote my efforts to posting messages here. There is a continual turnover of people visiting the site, but I think the people arguing in favor of cloning tend to stick around longer because the more they learn, the more they believe that this form of research needs more support. If you read something saying that we're all pro-cloners here, that could be said of the "regulars," if you will, but not people who've just posted messages for the first time.Cloning doesn't have too many negative issues to mention. Usually there's only one real issue, which varies from person to person, but ultimately has to do with basic ignorance or an unrelated personal fear. Some people look for one excuse after another to be against cloning because they're afraid of possibel isolation if others change their minds at a different rate than they do.
